Thought For The Day - 6/30/05

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Historically attributed to Ben Franklin (here's an interesting article on it).

BTW, it's Wanda's byline, too!

I am one of the guilty parties. I have used that saying more than once. However, no matter if it is a misquote of Franklin's or not, no matter how you say it, I believe the axiom rings true today . . . especially today. But I like the original, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." What beautiful words!

The Benster had a deft touch, n'est-ce pas?

Oui, c'est vrai.

Since you often visit my blog, you know that's my byline. I firmly believe and support every word!

It's so very true, Wanda - it's funny how you can read something over and over and not see it; it's there on your front page, big as life!

Every day, we seem to be more in danger of losing it.

I went over and read Wanda's post. It was sure a thing of beauty. You know, after reading your posts and Wanda's, I feel one coming on, too. Of course, I will have to wait until the weekend evening. Work has to come first:(

Give it a day to build a head of steam, and then...pow!

We'll be waiting.

Alicia - yeah, another day and a good night's sleep should help. I've been sleep deprived lately. I finally picked up one of those mattress pads that are conducive to sleeping. I slapped that on the bed, made it up and tried it out. Wow! It wasn't the egg crate pad I wanted, but I was able to sleep through the fireworks the neighbors are shooting off. Enough sleep and I should be able to shake off the fuzzy brain syndrome to get clear thoughts:)

Thought I'd drop by and wish you and yours a happy and safe 4th of July holiday!

Pass that one by the Republicans and I'm sure we'll see Congressional rants calling Franklin a communist.

Why not? It would fit the pattern of recent Nazi comparisons (from the Ds to the Rs) and claimed attacks on Christianity (Rs to the Ds) that have pervaded both sides.

I'm just waiting for the communist label to get officially applied to Canada in Congress- well, lookie here, shouldn't take too long after all.

From the Toronto Star (login req'd - it's free though):
Frank McKenna wants the "Canadian diaspora'' to be armed with facts, to debate Americans, to lobby when Washington makes decisions that can hurt Canadians and to try to counter the "Fox factor," referring to the U.S. television network, which often spreads disinformation and feeds a negative perception of its neighbour to the north.
For starters, McKenna wants his new recruits to tell their American neighbours and co-workers that:

-Canada is the largest source of imported crude oil in the U.S., bigger than Saudi Arabia or the yet untested reserves of Iraq.

-The country has rotated 13,500 troops in the war on terror, has committed $300 million to rebuilding Iraq and is about to deploy a reconstruction team to Afghanistan.

-None of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists entered the U.S. from Canada.

-Canada-U.S. trade supports more than five million American jobs.

Yep, the rhetoric will be hitting congress soon.

A less detailed but login free version is here on the CBC.
