Ann Richards

I was saddened yesterday by the news that Governor Ann Richards has died. She was a true Texas hero (born and raised *ahem*) and was a powerful force for progressive change. I always hoped in my heart of hearts that she would be our first female President. She died of esophageal cancer, which is what my dad has been battling.

Jurassicpork over at Welcome To Pottersville has her famous screed on "How To Be A Good Republican".

Best to your father, Alicia.

Thanks, Yoga - so far he has had better luck with it than Ann. She was diagnosed in March, gone in September. My dad was diagnosed in October, I think, and he's still hanging tough - even improving a little. This is a terrible disease - those in the EC community call it 'the Beast' - and one reason it's so devastating is that by the time it's diagnosed, it's too far gone to be easy to treat.

Hopefully the heightened public awareness of EC because of Ann Richards will get more people to check the early symptoms, like acid reflux (GERD).

Ann Richards was a great lady. I'm so saddened by this news - didn't hear about it on Saturday as I was flying - but she had guts, and she had attitude. I hope your father continues to improve!

Missed you!
